Update on Rental Registration: The City Commission will hear the latest version of the rental registration and inspection ordinance on Tuesday, February 4th, 2014; the meeting will begin at 6:35 PM, at City Hall, on 6th Street: . We believe that the rental regulation ordinance will come to a vote. As one LAN member said recently, this is the 9th inning. We can make this proposal a reality ONLY IF FOLKS SHOW UP AT THE MEETING! Please mark your calendars and plan to attend. Grab a neighbor and a friend. Let’s pack the room!

Yard waste pick up on demand!

Pedestrian Coalition, a joint effort of LAN and the League of Women Voters: The Lawrence Pedestrian Coalition will host City Manager Dave Corliss at our February 12, 2014 meeting. We will meet at 7 PM in the basement conference room of the Carnegie Building downtown, on Vermont Street. We have submitted a list of questions to City Staff, and Dave will attend to discuss the status of pedestrian access and safety in Lawrence.  Please mark your calendars and plan to attend!  Bring a friend or neighbor if you can, and feel free to share this announcement with folks who may be interested. If you’d like to review the questions that we submitted to the City, please email a request to Check out the pedestrian coalition, online: and

Community Village Lawrence to Hold Informational Gathering on February 1st: Community Village Lawrence (CVL) would like to invite you to our free community informational gathering with a special presentation from Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical Department on Saturday, February 1, 2014 from 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Fire Station #5 (1911 Stewart Ave. We will discuss the Telephone Reassurance Program, to include calls from volunteers on a regularly scheduled basis to ensure members are safe in their homes, and to provide reassurance to their families and themselves. A Home Safety and Fire Safety program will also be made possible through a partnership with the Lawrence-Douglas County Fire Medical to provide smoke detector checks, installation, safety inspections, and home safety education. Membership applications will be available and CVL staff will be present to assist with completion of the applications. Information on current volunteer opportunities will also be available. The Big Event, free community service work provided by KU students: From Allison Dittemore: Just following up and spreading information about the Big Event to all of the Neighborhood Associations! Homeowners can register online at and then click “Online Job Request” to register! It is a simple form to fill out, and once submitted, the homeowner will be contacted to set up a job site check. Please note that the Big Event is a “first come first serve” process, and applies to ALL community members; it is not only a “need based” service. If you have any questions you can contact me at this email, or call  (316)-300-8389!

Neighborhood Updates

Old West Lawrence: The residents of Old West Lawrence will hold a meeting. Saturday, February 1, 2014, from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Watkins Museum, 11th and Massachusetts, Lower Level Meeting Room. The agenda will include elections of officers and a presentation of the OWLA budget for 2014. There will also be a discussion of issues confronting planning and development in and around OWL. All residents of Old West Lawrence are encouraged to attend and to participate.

Centennial Neighborhood: CNA folks, plan to attend our Annual Meeting and Potluck Dinner at 6:00 p.m. on Feb. 12th at LHS. John Wilson , Kansas State Representative, who lives in the Centennial neighborhood, will be our speaker. University Place Neighborhood residents will also be invited.

East Lawrence Neighborhood Association: ELNA will hold a meeting February 3rd (not the 4th as the enews said, earlier). The meeting will be held Monday, February 3rd, 2014 7-9pm at the New York School library. Mark Thiel from the City of Lawrence will join us to discuss a plan for brick street repair. ELNA is also sponsoring a FREE FILM SERIES: Tuesday, Jan 28th, 6:30pm, in the New York School gym, featuring the film “Race: the Power of Illusion.” All are welcome, refreshments available. more info at
